Kevin Towers
Kevin Towers was born in Sonoma, California, on November 11, 1961. He moved to Oregon in 1975 and attended Medford Mid High in 1976 and ’77 followed by Medford Senior High in 1978 and 1979. He graduated in the Class of ’79. While at Medford Senior High, Towers led the varsity Black Tornados to two conference championships in baseball.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
- He played baseball, football and basketball in high school. As a freshman, he played baseball for the Renegades, then played for the Marauders as a sophomore. He was a member of the varsity Black Tornado teams during his junior and senior years. Both years, the team won the conference championship, and in 1979, the team advanced to the state semi finals. Towers also played on the Mustang Legion team 1978-80.
- On the football field, Towers was on the freshmen Renegade championship ·squad of 1976 and the Marauders title team in ’77. He played defensive back for the Black Tornado conference championship team and state semi-finalists in 1979.
- Towers played three years of basketball, competing for the freshmen Renegade team and the junior varsity teams his sophomore and junior years.
- Selected in the first round of the 1982 First-Year Player Draft after earning All-Western Athletic Conference honors as a right-handed pitcher for Brigham Young University. A Texas League All-Star in 1984, he pitched seven seasons in San Diego’s farm system before a series of arm operations ended his playing career at the Triple-A level in Las Vegas in 1988.
Towers was named the General Manager of the San Diego Padres on November 17, 1995. He was promoted to Executive Vice President/General Manager in March of 2000. The 2007 campaign marks 26 years in professional baseball for Towers, as well as his 24th season with the Padres organization. With 11 seasons as the head of the club’s base ball operations, he is the longest tenured general manager in franchise history and fourth longest with the same organization among current Major League general managers. On November 8, 2006, Towers’ contract was extended through the 2008 season. Under Towers’ guidance, the Padres have reached unprecedented heights. The 2006 club’s resiliency culminated with a National League West title, marking the first time in club history the Padres have reached the post-season in back-to-back years. Many off-season and in-season signings and acquisitions engineered by Towers were instrumental to the team’s success in 2006. San Diego has won four of its five National League West titles (1996, ’98, 2005, ’06) and the 1998 National League pennant under Towers’ direction.
