Helen Thompson Milne, Medford Sports Hall of FameHelen, following in the footsteps of her mother, Mrs. Belle Thompson Schenck (a well-known early day Medford lady golfer), started her golf tournament championships in 1947, winning the Southern Oregon Championship and the RVCC Club Championship the same year. From 1947 through 1980, she has won the Ladies Club Championship 24 times; 1947, 1949 through 1953, 1955, 1958 through 1960, 1962, 1964, 1967 through 1971, and 1974 through 1980. In 1956, Helen won the Golden Empire Golf Championship at Marysville, California.

The Oregon Amateur Golf Tournament was won by Helen in 1948 and 1966, with her placing 2nd in 1967. She holds the course record on the OLD ORIGINAL COURSE (no longer in use), at the Rogue Valley Country Club with a 71. Her game of 73 on course #1 still holds as a record as does her 33 on the inside nine.

A SOUTHERN OREGON GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP 10 times has to be some kind of a record. A Medford Mail Tribune article sums it up, “Simmons captures 10th SO crown. The world keeps putting Eddie Simmons on a pedestal, right up there alongside Helen Milne as the Southern Oregon Golf Tournament’s most successful golfer.” Helen won this prestigious tournament starting in 1947 and winning consecutively through 1953; again, winning in 1964, 1965 and 1966.
