H. Chandler Egan
“Chan” was a charter member of the Southern Oregon Sales pear packing co-op and though he was involved in fruit growing, his first love was golf. He designed the original Rogue Valley Country Club course and solicited the money from friends and local business people to purchase the land. He worked on design changes at Pebble Beach and did the Del Monte C.C.’s first 18. He laid out Reno C.C., 1st nine at Klamath Falls, the Eugene original course, Coos Bay and the second nine at Waverly in Portland, the Tualatin course and Riverside. He laid out courses in Spokane and Tacoma and was working on a course in Everett, Washington when he died.

The “Strange as it Seems” feature by John Hix, a newspaper cartoon and box much like the better known “Believe it or Not”, carried in 1936 a bit about the winner of U.S. Amateur in 1904 winning again in the Walker Cup Match of 1934. It was sensational for Medford, Oregon to have an entrant on the Walker Cup Team, especially a 50-year-old entrant.
