Barney Riggs
“Barn” played all sports for Ashland High School where he was selected All Tournament first team in 1944, the same year Ashland’s basketball team won the State Championship. He attended Southern Oregon College, lettering four years as a hard running back under coach Al Simpson and played basketball under coach Ted Schopf.
After graduation from Southern Oregon College he taught at Talent, Lincoln Grade School and Central Point Junior High School before coming to Medford’s newly opened Hedrick Junior High where he coached all sports until he retired 20 years later.
Barney’s teams won many games he coached but his main concern was to develop athletes who could gain success at the high school level for coaches Frank Roelandt and Fred Spiegelberg, of which there were many. “Barn’s” pride is in the boys be “brought along” and the contributions he made to the Medford High School Black Tornado teams.
