Stanley Dane Smith, Sr., Medford Sports Hall of FameStan was born March 24, 1924 in San Francisco, California. At an early age his family returned to the Rogue River Valley where his ancestors had chosen to settle in1872. After attending grade school at Ruch, on the Applegate, he moved to Medford where he was a starting tackle on both offense and defense for the Mcloughlin Bulldogs, and later an offensive and defensive starter on the Bill Bowerman coached Medford High Tiger team. The 1941 Tigers were runner-up for the Mythical State Title that year.

Stan dropped from school his senior year to serve with the Naval Air Corp during World War II. After three- and one-half years in the service, he again returned to the gridiron, this time starting as right tackle both offensively and defensively at Southern Oregon College in Ashland, Oregon under Coach Al Simpson. The legendary team of 1947 was one of only two undefeated teams in the nation. This booming right tackle on the Red Raider football team for four years gained honorable mention Little All-American by the Williamson system, a nation-wide polling hook-up for selecting outstanding football players.

After assisting at Southern Oregon College one football season, Stan coached at Redmond, Illinois Valley, Eagle Point, Baker and Ashland. While coaching at Eagle Point, his track team won the State A-2 Track Championship, and his football beam reached the semifinals. Stan initiated the sport of wrestling at Illinois Valley High School and Eagle Point High School.

The decision to Quit coaching once made, he turned from Gridiron to Griddle and conducted his restaurant affiliations in much the same manner as he had his coaching – very productively!

Stan was inducted into the District II NAIA Hall of Fame for his ability as a player, a coach, and his athletic-related philanthropic activities.

He joins with his son, Dane, as inductees into the Medford Sports Hall of Fame.
