Robert Warren Newland
Bob’s merits as a Medford High School athlete 1938 to 1940 in football, basketball, track & field, and junior legion baseball are without a doubt too lengthy to detail in such limited space. He excelled in the low hurdles and high jump; as a pitcher and batter with a .475 & .450 batting average: All-Star District and State as a center, forward, and guard on the basketball team: two years All-Southern Oregon Conference back in football. Superintendent E.H. Hedrick’s comment when hiring Bob for a teaching-coaching position in 1947, “Newland is the most versatile athlete to ever come out of Medford High School.
Bob attended the University of Oregon and during the war years the Navy V-12 Program at the University of Southern California. He was discharged, USMC, with the rank of 1st Lieutenant and returned to Oregon where he received his B.S. and master’s in physical education.
As Medford High Track & Field coach ten years, his teams were State of Oregon Champions nine times and second team one year. The Hayward Relay trophy was brought home eight times with second place twice and he produced eight prep All-Americans.
Bob has served at many track and field events from 1955 to 1985, his most recent being 1980 Meet Director, US. Olympic Trials -Eugene;1985 referee – Western Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.: team manager, U.S. National Track & Field team to Tokyo, Russian, Japanese, American meet; and team manager U.S. National Track & Field Team-World Cup in Canberra, Australia. Also served as Director of Research & Development – Nike.
